Thank you for featuring my favorite work from my favorite Japanese photographer Tomatsu Shomei. While the more accessible “Chewing Gum and Chocolate” or b/w Okinawa stuff gets written about all time time (rightly so), the more abstract Plastics work, or the estuary series (Interface) is amazing but seemingly little mentioned. But Tomatsu has been interested in surfaces for a long time, asphalt photos in 60s, or the walls of bars in Koza…. Great comparison too!
You’re welcome. I was struck by this series of work when I found it. They are very simple and strong images. Always fun to look for the minor but great works that few people picked up.
