I was too little to experience the culture in the 1980s, so am very curious about the time.

This little booklet of Shoji Ueda (1913-2000) has been published in conjunction with the exhibition “Mode in Dunes” at Taka Ishii Gallery photography/Film (Feb 24 – Mar 27 2012).

Ueda is known for his style of localism and amateurism. Ueda lived and worked in Tottori prefecture ,where he grew up, for almost entire life. Regarding amateurism, I’m not gonna talk about the definition of amateur photographer but Ueda often said “I play with photograph”, which probably means to be free from various restrictions.

Ueda had never did commercial work until his son as an art director in advertisement industry suggested to try for fashion photography in 1983. Ueda had lost his beloved wife in the same year and decided to take next step.

In his seventies at that time, Ueda showed his creativity in commercial assignment by TAKEO KIKUSHI, Agnes b and kind ware.

Tottori Sand Dune was his home ground.
