直接的すぎず、プライベートな臭いになりすぎず、どこかに関係していきながらでも詩的であるっていうのを目指しています。

川内倫子『照度 あめつち 影を見る』（青幻舎, 2012）, p.103

This book has been published in conjunction with the exhibition, Illuminance, Ametsuchi, Seeing Shadow, at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.

写真集の表紙のイメージ、川内倫子さんの代名詞ともいえる、日常の断片をスクエア・フォーマットで切り取るスタイル、ではありませんね。今回の展示・カタログには「Illuminance」シリーズやその他の過去の作品も含まれているのですが、「あめつち」と題された新しいシリーズを見てみたいと思います。

You probably feel the difference from her previous works, neither square format nor fragments from everyday life. In the exhibition and this catalogue, illuminance and other projects in the past were included but I would like to show the latest series, titled Ametsuchi.

「あめつち」は、阿蘇の野焼き、銀鏡神社の夜神楽、イスラエルの「嘆きの壁」、プラネタリウムの4つのサブジェクトから成り立っています。

Ametsuchi, literary means “heaven and earth”, consists of four subjects. Field burnings in Mt Aso, Shiromi Kagura in Miyazaki, Wailing Wall in Israel, and planetariums.

川内さんが、2008年から撮影を開始したという阿蘇の野焼きは、6 x 6 フィルム、35mm フィルム、4 x 5 フィルムといろいろ試した結果、「野焼きの迫力と、阿蘇の土地の広大さに対しては4 x 5じゃないと対峙できない」と大型カメラを選択します。

Kawauchi started to take photographs of field burnings in Aso in 2008 and decided to use view camera (4 x 5 film) after trying 6 x 6 and 35mm. Kawauchi thought that view camera is the right tool to confront the energy of the field burning. Also the photographer “wanted to pay respect for the sacred ritual of the locals”.

「Illuminance」のシリーズでは、撮影した場所が特定できないようなイメージが意図的に選ばれていました。この「あめつち」でも基本的にはそのルールに則っていますが、サブジェクトはより具体的なもの（儀式）です。

上の夜神楽は、「時間を写したかった」ために長時間露光で撮影されています。

Kawauchi had been trying to avoid site-specific images in order to make imaginable room for each readers.  Photographs in Ametsuchi also followed the rule but the subjects in this series have more concrete meanings than the ones in Illuminance. Above image of Shiromi Kagura was shot in a shrine in Miyazaki. Kagura is a ritual of a specific type of Shinto theatrical dance. Kawauchi photographed it in slow shutter speed to preserve time in the image.

何を撮るかっていうのは、なんでもよくて、そこに、こう、あったかいな、優しい感じだなとか、綺麗だなって思ったりするけど、あんまり関係ないかな、押すのと、撮ってるものとは。あんまり関係ない。だから、シンプルなんですよね。押すっていうシンプルなことが愛があるし、好き。

今日は川内倫子さんの展覧会「照度　あめつち　影をみる」を見に来ました。

I came here today for Rinko Kawauchi’s exhibition; Illuminance, Ametsuchi, Seeing Shadow just started today.

BOOKS AND PRINTS JOURNAL is periodical from the bookshop that photographer Shingo Wakagi owns in his hometown, Hamamatsu Shizuoka.

地元で作品をつくる写真家もいます、地元を拠点に活動する写真家もいます。

Some photographers make works in their hometown, some just live there.

若木さんは地元に写真集やプリントを売る本屋をつくりました。

Wakagi lives in Tokyo but opened a bookshop in his hometown.

アレック・ソスも地元写真家。故郷のミネソタにスタジオをかまえます。誌面上では、そんな2人の写真家がスカイプで対談。

Alec Soth lives in his hometown, Minneapolis Minnesota. Soth and Wakagi talked about their thought about hometown over the skype.

ソス「ぼくの場合は大きな街に暮らす必要を特に感じていないんだ。収入は主にプリントを販売することで得ている。実際、ギャラリーの大半はNYにあるんだけれど、今はPCもあるし、こうしてスカイプで話すこともできる」

Soth: I don’t have to live in big city like NY. I make living mainly by selling prints. Most of the galleries are in NY but we have PC and can talk over skype like this

若木「たしかにぼくの本屋は故郷の浜松にあるんだけど、ぼくは雑誌や広告の仕事もしているからね。やっぱり故郷は東京にしておかないといろいろ不都合が多いんだ。」

Wakagi: My bookshop is in my hometown, Hamamatsu, but I need to be in Tokyo because I do magazine and commercial work too.

若木さんは、仕事をするには東京にいる必要があるけど、地元に何か還元したい、そういう思いがあるんですね。

日本人の活躍されている写真家で、地方で制作をしている方はあまりいません。この冊子を読んで、写真家と地元、写真家と地方について考えはじめました。

Wakagi needs to stay in Tokyo but he wanted to give something back to his hometown.

It is true that most of the top photographers in Japan live and work in Tokyo. This brochure made me start to think about photographer and hometown, also photographer in countryside.

コンパクトカメラを持って街へ繰り出しました。

Inspired by Robert Frank, he used 35mm compact camera and went out to the street.

スナップ写真を撮るときの、スポーツのような、ハンターのような感覚が好きでした。

Shooting in town was like sport and hunt. He liked that.

モノクロでもカラーでも、とにかくスナップ。

Both monochrome and color.

スナップ写真の名人、Gerry Winogrand（ゲリー・ウィノグランド）がメンターでした。

His mentor was Gerry Winogrand.

そんな、スナップ大好きなマイロウィッツですが、1970年代後半に大判カメラを使いはじめました。

But he acquired another instrument in 1970s, view camera.

街中ではありません。

Not street.

事件もありません。

Not incident.

「（スナップ写真とは）別の表現方法を獲得したんだ」そうです。

あんなにスナップが好きだったのに、まったく違うスタイルでも撮れる。器用ですね。

だから、家にいるときにしか見られない。

眠らせておくのももったいないので、スキャンしてiPadに入れて持ち歩くことにしました。

It’s easy to carry a paperback but not a photobook. It’s heavy and big.

That is why we only read photobook home.

So I decided to scan photobooks and put them into iPad.

写真集というオブジェクトをなくして、データにしてしまう。抵抗ありますよね。

Nobody wants to cut photobook and throw away.

なので、比較的手に入りやすくて（本としてまた欲しくなったら購入しやすい）、何回もくり返し見たい（昔の人のモノグラフとかマスターピースとか）写真集が適してます。

But if the photobook is not rare (and reasonable enough to purchase after cutting) and you want to read it many times, it’s worth considering.

もちろん、デメリットもあります。

写真集の大きさが分からなくなるし、ページをめくる感触がなくなってしまう。

Of course you can’t touch the book anymore and forget the size of the book.

もちろん、メリットもあります。

いつでもどこでも見られます。カフェでも旅行先でも。ベッドでごろごろしてるときも本棚まで取りにいかなくていいです。

But you can see it at cafe, bring it to trip, anytime anywhere.

手軽に見られるので見る回数も増えます。だからいままで気がつかなかったディテールを見つけたりします。

Probably you will see the book more than before.

あ、あと本棚のスペースが増えました。

Also it saves space in bookshelf.

第2回目は、Cindy Sherman（シンディ・シャーマン）のMoMAでの展覧会です。

2012年2月から6月までNYのMoMAで行われた後、アメリカ国内を巡回する予定の大規模な回顧展。サイトも充実してます。

I can’t go to exhibition in Western countries. All I can do is to visit official web site for the exhibition.

Today, I went to Cindy Sherman’s exhibition.

展覧会と同じ様に、展示室ごとに作品を見ることができます。

Works are being showed gallery by gallery.

有名な「Untitled Film Still」。

初期の動画作品、「Doll Clothes」（ 1975）も見られます。

これだけ展覧会のサイトが充実していると、展示に行ってみたくなりますね。もちろん日本からは簡単にいけませんが、サイトだけでも十分に楽しめます。

It’s great to have website like this for an exhibition. I can’t go to MoMA but could learn more about the artist.

中平さんの写真はいつも、ことばとセットになっていました。

Nakahira’s photographs were always with his words.

しかし、その「ことば」が中平さんをしばっていき、スランプにおちいってしまいます。

それから、試行錯誤や記憶喪失の病、再起を経て、1990年代以降にはこういう写真になりました。

But his words suppressed his action, and he went into an slump.

After repeated trial and error, falling ill and losing some of his memory and recovery, his works eventually changed drastically in 1990s.

【中平卓馬さんの本（まずはこの3冊）】
- 来るべき言葉のために 1970年に出版された写真集がオシリスから再刊。装本は服部一成さん。
- 原点復帰ー横浜 中平卓馬展「原点復帰─横浜」（横浜美術館、2003年）に際して刊行された図録。テキストは、批評家の倉石信乃さん、八角聡仁さん、  写真家の森山大道さん、中川道夫さん、ホンマタカシさんと充実。

カラー写真で有名なアメリカ人写真家、William Eggleston（ウィリアム・エグルストン）は1960年代終わりから70年代のはじめにかけて、モノクロで写真を撮っていました。
